Panama Citizenship in 2026: The Ultimate Guide

Updated: 19 June 2026

Panamanian citizenship is attractive to retirees, business owners, or anyone interested in obtaining a second passport due to its favorable tax environment and strategic location. So, what are the requirements for Panamanian citizenship in 2026? As a Central American nation, Panama offers four paths for citizenship: by birth, by naturalization, by descent, and by marriage.

On the other hand, investors mainly question whether it is possible to get Panama citizenship by investment. In practice, you can obtain a Panama passport through investment after holding your Panama residency for 5 years and meeting the legal requirements. Now, let’s briefly inform you about your journey to Panamanian citizenship.

How to Get Panama Citizenship in 2026?

As mentioned above, there are several methods for acquiring Panamanian nationality. The alternative ways make it accessible to different people around the world. Nevertheless, each route opens doors to a unique opportunity to call Panama your home.

1. Panama Citizenship by Birth

Panama adheres to the principle of jus soli (right of soil). It means that a child born on Panamanian soil automatically acquires citizenship. According to Article 9 of the Political Constitution of Panama, the main requirements include:

  • Those born in Panama
  • Those who have Panamanian parents, born outside the Republic of Panama, if they settle in Panama.
  • Those whose parents were citizens of Panama through naturalization, born abroad, if they settle in Panama and express their will to become a Panama citizen within one year after they turn 18 years old.

2. Panama Citizenship by Descent

Under the Panamanian Law, citizenship by descent is evaluated under citizenship by birth category. In other words, if one of your parents is a Panamanian national, you can be eligible for Panamanian citizenship.

However, there are also exceptions for those with strong ties to Panama, especially Americans. One such example is the Panama Canal Zone. Also known as the Zonians, Americans born in the Panama Canal Zone between 1904 and 1979 may be eligible for Panamanian nationality if they meet the legal requirements. This happens due to the abolition of the US administration over the Panama Canal, as many people living in that Panamanian territory took US citizenship.

3. Panama Citizenship by Marriage

Although marrying a Panamanian citizen does not automatically grant you citizenship, it may only shorten your path to citizenship. At this point, it is important to emphasize that you must still apply for Panama temporary residence (after 3 years of continued residency in Panama, you can apply for Panama permanent residency as well) and prove that your marriage is genuine and stable.

Additionally, your marriage should be registered in Panama’s civil registry. You will need to collect documents such as your marriage certificate, proof of a bona fide marital relationship, and similar documents from the traditional naturalization process.

4. Panama Citizenship By Naturalization

Panama citizenship by naturalization requires legal residency and real commitment. Here are the essential requirements to obtain Panama citizenship by naturalization:

  • You must demonstrate continuous residency in Panama for at least five years.
  • You’ll need proof of proficiency in Spanish, likely through a test or interview.
  • Panama seeks individuals of good character and sound health. You may undergo a background check and provide a clean health report to meet this requirement.
  • The specific documents needed will vary depending on your individual circumstances. However, some standard requirements include your passport, proof of residency, proof of income, a clean criminal record, and a marriage certificate (if applicable).

Is It Possible to Become a Panamanian Citizen by Investment?

Through the Qualified Investor Visa, also known as Panama Golden Visa, global investors can initially be granted permanent residence by investing at least $300,000 to a Panamanian real estate. There are also other qualifying investment routes, including Panamanian-listed securities or fixed-deposit investments in a Panamanian Bank. To keep your permanent residency status, you must visit Panama once every two years and maintain your investment. At the end of 5 years, you and your eligible family members can become eligible for Panamanian nationality.

To apply for Panama nationality by investment, you must pass the Spanish-language and citizenship test, which is in a multiple-choice format and asks questions about Panamanian history and geography in Spanish. At the time of citizenship application, if you have a family member below the age of 18 at the time of application, they must keep their permanent residency and take the test when they are 18.

Once you and your family members achieve your Panamanian passport, you will have visa free access to over 140 countries, including the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, and most of South America.

There are also other Panama residency options. These include Friendly Nations, Forestry Investor, and Pensinado Visa programs to obtain citizenship through naturalization by meeting the legal requirements.

Panama Citizenship by Investment Requirements

Under the Panama Qualified Investor Visa program, investors must first chose one of the eligible investment options and make the minimum investment to one of the qualifying investment routes:

  • Invest at least USD 300,000 in Panamanian real estate.
  • Make an investment of at least USD 500,000 in Panamanian listed securities
  • Make at least USD 750,000 in a fixed deposit in a Panamanian Bank

Once the investment path is chosen:

  • You start to prepare the required documents for the investment types required for the Panama Residence by Investment Program.
  • At this stage, you must make your investment.
  • Before submitting your application, in order to handle things remotely, you can authenticate a Power of Attorney to handle the paperwork in Panama.
  • Once you submit your application, it will be analyzed by the Ministry of Commerce.
  • The Ministry of Commerce will respond to you within 15 days. If your application is successful, an investor certificate will be issued. Then your file will be sent to the National Migration Service.
  • After you get approval, you must visit Panama to give biometrics and receive your permanent residency card.
  • After 5 years of holding your Panama permanent residence status, apply for citizenship.

How to Get Dual Citizenship in Panama? Is it Possible in 2026?

Under Article 13 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Panama, applicants for Panamanian citizenship by naturalization must renounce their original citizenship. In practice, this is done via a sworn declaration (affidavit) before a Panamanian notary public. This declaration primarily includes a willingness to obtain Panamanian citizenship and renounce their other nationality, which is then submitted with the naturalization file before the National Immigration Service.

Upon this declaration, Panamanian authorities do not require any additional documents proving the renunciation of your original citizenship. Therefore, the effectiveness of the renunciation depends on the laws of the applicant’s country of origin. In most cases, foreign countries do not recognize such a renunciation. We recommend that you consult with your lawyer before taking any steps.

Processing Time for Becoming a Panama Citizen

The timelines for Panamanian nationality are not strict. It depends on your route to citizenship and the complexity of your case. Approximately, you can expect these timelines:

  • Citizenship by birth: around 3-6 months
  • Citizenship by descent: 3-6 months
  • Citizenship by marriage: 3 years of marriage
  • Citizenship by naturalization: 5 years of continuous residency in Panama
  • Citizenship by investment: 5 years of holding your residency status

Please note that there is no certain process for everyone. However, the processing time for a citizenship application may generally take one to two years.

Benefits of Panama Citizenship

You may be imagining the beautiful beaches of Panama and considering it as an outstanding benefit. However, the applicants have more to rely on as the country is considered as a tax haven, attracting many individuals and families who strategically plan their futures.

Territorial Tax System

The Panamanian territorial tax system means that your income generated outside Panama is generally exempt from your Panamanian income taxes.

No matter if the Panamanian companies are owned or controlled by foreign nationals, this policy extends to those companies as well. This situation makes Panama an attractive destination for establishing and operating businesses with a global reach.

Low Capital Gains Taxes

Income gains taxes on the sale of assets like stocks and real estate are typically low, further encouraging investment in Panama. These favorable rates serve as a significant incentive for investors. In addition, they promote further investment within the country’s economic landscape.

Exemptions and Incentives

Panama is also attractive for retirees, investors, and businesses as the country is able to offer tax exemptions by law. So, specific sectors and real estate investments can have tax exemptions up to a certain value.

Such exemptions increase Panama’s attractiveness as an investment destination. Additionally, they stimulate economic activity and job creation in targeted sectors.

Location

Panama has a strategic position between North and South America. It offers great advantages for those seeking global connectivity and a dynamic business environment.

Panama City: Top Hub for the Americas

For the Americas, Panama City is considered a central transportation hub. This position makes Panama a mobile center for travel and trade.

Panama City makes it easy to access not only within the region but also to destinations across the globe. This facilitation is mainly because of the two international airports and extensive flight connections worldwide.

The strategic location of Panama enhances its significance as a key player in regional and international affairs. It is an encouraging factor for economic growth and cultural exchange. You can also find networks to start a business through, such as the American Chamber of Commerce.

Freight Hub

The pivotal role of the Panama Canal appears in global trade, positioning Panama as a vital link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Moreover, this strategic advantage translates into significant benefits for businesses. Panama offers efficient logistics and reduced shipping costs for goods traveling between major markets.
