Updated: 5 May 2025

Sometimes, it is difficult to know what is true or false about the Portugal Golden Visa. You may hear many different things and ask yourself: “Which one is correct?”

To help with this, we spoke with experts from the industry. In our video, they explain the most common myths from the application process to the rules for getting Portuguese citizenship.

Here are some important facts:

  • You do not get residency rights right after submitting your application.
  • You must make your investment before applying for the Golden Visa.
  • Biometric data (fingerprints and photos) must be given in Portugal.
  • A qualified fund does not always mean it is the best choice for you.
  • You can check and compare funds without being in Portugal.
  • You cannot take your money out of the fund before 5 years.
  • A fund’s exit strategy is just as important as the return it offers.
  • Not all funds are the same, they are not all low-risk or guaranteed.
  • Fund managers still have responsibility after you invest.
  • It is possible to switch funds during the 5 years, but it is not always a good idea.

And when it comes to citizenship:

  • You can apply for Portuguese citizenship after 5 years of holding the visa.
  • Citizenship is not automatic, you must apply and pass an A2-level Portuguese test.
  • Language skills are only needed for citizenship, not for visa renewals.
  • Children must meet rules to keep their visa after turning 18.
  • Once you become a citizen, leaving the fund may depend on the fund’s rules.
