Why an LGBTQ+ Family Is Planning a Future in Portugal: Two Fathers’ Future Planning for Their Sons

For Melvin and Trevor, planning a future in Portugal isn’t about leaving California behind. It’s about giving their two sons the freedom to choose where they belong.

Most parents think about their children’s future in terms of education, financial security, and opportunity. For Melvin and Trevor, a married couple living in the San Francisco Bay Area, that planning began before their sons were even born, with a question that would eventually take them across the Atlantic.

What if their children could grow up knowing they had the option to build a life somewhere else?

It was a question about opportunity, but also about belonging. As two fathers, Melvin and Trevor wanted to know that wherever their family might choose to live, they would be recognized as a family.

Their experience is the subject of a documentary interview produced by Get Golden Visa, exploring how parenthood, family recognition, and the desire for greater freedom shaped their decision to pursue residency in Portugal.

A Future Worth Planning for

In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought international travel to a standstill, Melvin and Trevor began reconsidering how much freedom people really had to choose where they lived.

They were not yet parents, but they were already thinking about the family they hoped to build.

“For our children, if we can plan early, this is something we want to give them so that they have choices that they can make, you know, on their own,” Melvin told Werner Gruner of Get Golden Visa.

Their intention was never to abandon their lives in California. Instead, they wanted to create possibilities their children might one day appreciate, even if they never needed to use them.

But as they explored their options, they discovered that having the right to live in another country was only part of the equation.

When Being Married Doesn’t Mean Being Recognized as Parents

For Melvin and Trevor, choosing a country meant considering something many families might take for granted: whether both fathers would be legally recognized as their children’s parents.

“We didn’t realize that there was such a huge difference of not just gay marriage, but also the recognition of families from two gay parents,” Trevor explained.

Their experience revealed a distinction that can have profound implications for families crossing international borders.

A country may recognize same-sex marriage without providing the same legal recognition to both parents and their children.

For Melvin and Trevor, this was no longer an abstract legal question. It became a defining consideration in deciding where their family could feel secure, accepted, and at home.

They were not simply looking for somewhere they were permitted to live. They wanted somewhere they could imagine belonging.

Why Portugal Entered the Picture

Portugal emerged as a potential destiation because of its legal recognition of same-sex marriage and adoption, alongside an investment-based residency pathway that did not require the family to relocate immediately.

The couple began working with Get Golden Visa in 2022 to pursue Portuguese residency through the Portugal Golden Visa program.

For now, California remains home. Their children are young, and moving to another country is not part of their immediate plans.

Instead, Melvin and Trevor hope to build a relationship with Portugal gradually, through visits and shared experiences that could make the country familiar to their sons long before they face decisions about where to study, work, or live.

“Keeping the door open for our family and children is important,” Melvin said.

That idea sits at the heart of their story.

The Choice Belongs to Their Children

Melvin and Trevor cannot predict what their sons will want from life.

They may choose to stay in California. They may want to study in Europe, pursue careers abroad, or settle somewhere their parents have never considered.

Immigration rules may also change along the way, making long-term planning far from straightforward.

But the couple’s goal is not to decide their children’s future in advance. It is to give them more freedom to decide for themselves.

Their story offers a different perspective on international residency: one in which the motivation is not necessarily relocation, but the possibility of belonging in more than one place.

And for a family whose experience has shown that legal recognition cannot always be taken for granted, that possibility carries particular meaning.

Melvin and Trevor do not know whether their sons will ever choose to make Portugal home.

They simply want that door to remain open.
