April 2026: Portugal Approves Revised Nationality Law | What It Means?

After several months of debate, the Portuguese Parliament approved its revised Nationality Law and sent it to the President’s approval on April 1, 2026, introducing stricter eligibility rules and additional provisions related to criminal convictions.

The proposal also includes major changes to Portugal’s citizenship residency requirements, potentially extending the naturalization timeline process to 7 years for EU and CPLP nationals and 10 years for other applicants, compared with the current five-year path.
