I\’m looking to buy a property around 250,000€ to rent out on a holiday let basis and live in rest of time. So maybe a 50/50 ratio. I\’m from UK can get a Portuguese passport through family. I would appreciate any advice on taxation on earnings n whether better as a UK or Portuguese resident to buy / let.

my mother and father in law (Portuguese residents) passed away and left their house to their 2 sons both USA residents for many years. the house was sold after my husband died, I inherit his his share of the sale. Am i responsible for any taxes or fees to the Portuguese Government? I am been an USA citizen and resident for 60 years. I have no property nor any interest in Portugal.

Hello Paul, on a €380,000 property acquisition in Portugal, you would roughly be looking at:
IMT of €18,440
Stamp Duty of €3,040
So, a total tax of €21,480

Please can you explain the Marginal/Medium columns in the IMT table?
As an example could you show how it would be applied to calculate the tax on a €380000 property?

Hello David, you will be looking at around:
IMT Tax of €7,362.81
Stamp Duty of €1,880
So, in total around €9,242.81 in property taxes.
